Double Glazed Glass (DGU)

Double glazed glass units consist of two glass panes separated by an air or gas-filled gap. This design significantly improves thermal and acoustic insulation, making it the preferred choice for energy-efficient modern homes.

Double Glazed Glass

What Is Double Glazed Glass?

A Double Glazed Unit (DGU), also called an Insulated Glass Unit (IGU), consists of two glass panes sealed together with a spacer bar around the perimeter, creating a hermetically sealed air or gas-filled cavity between them. This cavity acts as an insulating barrier, significantly reducing heat transfer and sound transmission.

DGUs are the standard glazing choice for high-performance uPVC window and door systems, providing the thermal performance required for energy-efficient buildings.

Key Benefits

  • Significantly improved thermal insulation — reduces heat loss and gain
  • Better acoustic insulation — reduces external noise
  • Reduces condensation on interior glass surfaces
  • Improves energy efficiency — reduces heating and cooling costs
  • Enhances comfort — eliminates cold spots near windows
  • Available with various glass types (toughened, Low-E, tinted)

DGU Configurations

Standard Air-Filled DGU

Two glass panes with a dry air-filled cavity. Good thermal performance at an economical price point.

  • Common configurations: 4-12-4, 4-16-4mm
  • Suitable for most residential applications
Argon-Filled DGU

Argon gas (denser than air) fills the cavity, providing better thermal insulation than air-filled units.

  • Better thermal performance than air-filled
  • Recommended for high-performance applications
Low-E DGU

One pane has a Low-E coating that reflects heat back into the room in winter and keeps heat out in summer — maximum energy efficiency.

  • Best thermal performance
  • Ideal for energy-efficient homes
